The challenge

RSK, a global leader in the delivery of environmental and engineering solutions, has committed to protecting water resources in all locations where it works. Achieving this goal requires overcoming several challenges, including data gaps, limited visibility of water use across diverse operations, and the lack of a consistent baseline to guide decisions.

The complexity increases with activities spanning the UK and international locations, including in water-stressed regions, making a coordinated, data-driven approach essential to effectively manage and reduce water use.

The solution

To address these challenges, RSK commissioned WRc to conduct a comprehensive assessment of operational water use for FY25 to develop a company baseline. This data-driven approach focused on building a robust foundation for action. WRc evaluated the quality and suitability of existing data to establish reliable baselines and estimated water consumption across all relevant sites. The analysis identified high water-use areas and key trends by business units, enabling prioritisation of effort.

WRc also developed a set of targeted, practical recommendations, including priority sites for detailed water audits, the introduction of water-efficient fittings and interventions, and opportunities to enhance data collection through company reporting mechanisms. This laid the foundation for RSK to transition from fragmented insights to a coordinated, strategic water management programme.

The outcome

Through this engagement, RSK gained a comprehensive understanding of its water footprint and a clear step forward to achieve its reduction targets. The identification of high-impact intervention areas enables more efficient allocation of investment and accelerates potential water savings across operations. Improved data quality and visibility support ongoing monitoring, better decision-making, and proactive management of water use.

Beyond internal benefits, RSK’s approach positions the organisation as a leader in sustainable resource management, aligning with national and international water reduction goals. By embedding a data-led strategy, RSK is not only advancing its own sustainability ambitions but also contributing meaningfully to broader efforts to reduce water demand and protect scarce resources.
