What is hydroseeding?

Hydraulic seeding or hydroseeding is a quick method of establishing grasses, wild flowers and trees. Hydroseeding involves applying a mixture of seeds, fertiliser and other additives to ground requiring vegetating, using liquid mulches. For decades it has been used to establish plants and trees in large or inaccessible areas.

Hydroseeding is often more effective than conventional seeding for a variety of reasons. Seed and other components are mixed in a liquid base, meaning that the seeds are given a headstart, while also being easy to apply to many types of soil, including on steep slopes.

What are the benefits of hydroseeding?

Hydroseeding has many advantages over more traditional methods and is beneficial if you need to establish vegetation quickly at a lower cost and require low-risk protection for vegetation areas.

Hydroseeding benefits include:

  • quickly establishing erosion control on slopes and embankments
  • an even coverage of seed mixture across sites and rough terrains
  • quick growth in amenity spaces
  • a safe, low risk way to establish vegetation
  • improves vegetating polluted ground in which plants are struggling to establish
  • it’s viable on steeper slopes where traditional plant/machinery would struggle, such as railway embankments.

We have developed hydroseeding solutions for erosion control and revegetation, particularly for poor and polluted soils. Our unique mix of additives encourages plants to gather nutrients, resulting in rapid vegetation with high success rates. Collaborating with many research institutions ensures our solutions are rigorously tested and industry leading.

Our simple hydroseeding process is tailored to your landscape and soil needs

  1. We assess your site to create a unique mix to complement your soils specific requirements for better germination.
  2. The mulch mix is applied using our Finn hydroseeder machines. Our hydroseeders are some of the largest available, enabling us to undertake any size of project.
  3. Once applied, a microclimate is established to support with quicker germination and enhanced growth, as it is protected from the elements.

Tailored hydroseeding applications

We understand that certain landscapes require different applications of hydroseeding and have conducted research to ensure we cater to many environments. Some tailored applications we have created are as follows.

Mines

Mines

A contaminated land remediation solution used hydroseeding to establish vegetation cover on sites of historical heavy metal and metalliferous pollution at mines and on metal processing sites.

Swales

Swales

Hydroseeding solved the environmental problems associated with the establishment of vegetation within roadside and attenuation swales.

Verges

Verges

• Hydroseeding can be used for bank stabilisation and vegetation establishment and control on weak slopes with poor soil, such as those found near roadsides.

Embankments

Embankments

For soil improvement and vegetation establishment on steep, dry slopes with little or no soil.

How our unique mulch mixes stand out

  • We can establish a wide range of native wild flower seed or grass mixes.
  • It is a low-carbon solution, with the addition of biochar in our specialist mixes as carbon is locked in.
  • The tackifiers and hydroseeding slurry are designed to lock seeds in with the soil, reducing the possibility of being washed away.
  • Our products are researched and designed extensively to be organic and biodegradable.
